What is Hajj e Badal?
Hajj Badal and Hajj e Badal are used by the Muslims of the Indo-Pak subcontinent. However, Badal Hajj [ بدل حج ] and Hajj al-Badal [ حج البدل ] are the Arabic terms.
Both phrases respectively convey one and the same; the performance of the obligatory pilgrimage on behalf of those:
- Who have died without having done so;
- Who by reason of illness or disability;
- To undertake a voluntary hajj on behalf of someone.
This is also referred to as Proxy Hajj, or hajj by proxy. While performing Hajj e Badal, the person performing the pilgrimage on behalf of another individual (the “proxy”) is obligated to carry out all the rituals and practices of Hajj with devotion and sincerity. These involve entering into the state of Ihram, performing the Tawaf of the Kaaba, and performing the Sa’i. The purpose throughout the process is to fulfill the duty on behalf of the person they represent.

What is Umrah Badal?
Umrah Badal is an action where an Umrah is done on behalf of another person who cannot do so themselves. It is a practice that allows one to fulfill the performance of Umrah on another person’s behalf, most commonly due to illness, old age, physical disability, or any other legitimate restriction.
The Arabic word “Badal (بدل)” means “substitution” or “in lieu of.” Umrah Badal would refer to the substitutionary performance of Umrah on one’s behalf if one cannot do it themselves. The one performing the Umrah Badal assumes the burden and the intention of performing the pilgrimage on behalf of the person they are doing it for.Umrah Badal is a charitable act that provides a means for those who cannot make the pilgrimage in person to still achieve the spiritual rewards and blessings of Umrah.
While performing Umrah Badal, the person performing the pilgrimage on behalf of another individual (the “proxy”) is obligated to carry out all the rituals and practices of Umrah with devotion and sincerity. These involve entering into the state of Ihram, performing the Tawaf of the Kaaba, and performing the Sa’i .The goal throughout is to fulfill the obligation in place of the person they represent.

Abdullah ibn Abbas I narrated:
A woman from the tribe of Khath’am said, “O Allah’s Messenger! My father is an old man and cannot perform Hajj and Umrah, nor can he sit firmly on the camel. Can I perform Hajj and Umrah on his behalf?” The Prophet ﷺ replied, “Yes, you may perform Hajj and Umrah on his behalf. Don’t you think that if your father had a debt, you would pay it off for him? Fulfill the obligations of your parents, for they are amongst your best opportunities (to earn rewards).” (Abu Dawood)
Abdullah ibn Abbas I narrated:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “Whoever performs Hajj for Allah’s sake and does not have sexual relations with his wife, and does not do evil or sins then he will return (after Hajj free from all sins) as if he were born anew.” The companions asked, “O Allah’s Messenger! Should we perform Hajj every year?” He replied, “If you have the means to do so, then yes. And whoever performs Umrah on behalf of his parents, or performs Umrah on behalf of one of them, then he should fulfill their pledges and debts, and Allah will record a good deed for him for every step he takes.” (Bukhari)
