Introduction: The Spiritual Journey of Umrah
Umrah is a religious pilgrimage made by Muslims in the holy city of Makkah. It is not obligatory like Hajj but is very rewarding and spiritually enriching. It is when one can wash away the sins committed earlier and request Allah’s mercy. It is also when one can see the profound beauty of worship within the Ka’bah. The following is a step-by-step Umrah guide with required duas, regulations for Ihram, and special precautions for men and women.
1. The Importance and Significance of Umrah
- Umrah consists of four major rites: Ihram, Tawaf, Sa’i, and Hal.
- It can be done at any time of the year.
- It’s a great way of seeking Allah’s forgiveness.
- All the actions of Umrah follow the example of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
2. Preparation for Umrah
Ensure the following before starting your Umrah trip:
- Sincere Intention (Niyyah): Perform Umrah for Allah’s sake alone
- Understanding Rituals: Learn each step to get it right.
- Ghusl (Purification): Clean the entire body before donning Ihram.
- Financial Preparedness: Make all the expenses halal.
- Personal Matters: Ask others for forgiveness and clear outstanding debts.

3. Step-by-Step Umrah Guide
1. Ihram & Niyyah (Entering the State of Ihram)
Ihram is the sacred state required for the performance of Umrah.
For Men
- Wear two white unstitched garments (Izar & Rida).
- Avoid using perfumes after wearing Ihram.
For Women
- Dress in proper attire covering the whole body (except hands and face).
- Women do not require a special garment called Ihram.
Dua for Niyyah (Intention for Umrah)
“Ya Allah, I am planning to do the Umrah, make it easy for me and accept it from me.”
Recite the following Talbiyah
Here I am, O Allah. There is no partner with You. Indeed, all the blessings and the grace and the kingdom are Yours.
Restrictions in the State of Ihram
During the state of ihram, pilgrims ought to avoid the following:
- Hair trimming and nail clipping
- With perfumes, scented soaps, or scented lotions
- Wearing sewn-on attire (in men)
- Head covering (in men) or face covering (in women)
- Engaging in marital relations
- Arguing, quarrelling, or using bad language
- Hunting, harming, or killing animals
- Rooting or harming plants
- Application of cosmetics, deodorants, or scented oils
- Wearing gloves (for women)
Breaking such prohibitions would require an expiation (fidya) through sacrifice, fasting, or charitable donation.
2. Entering the Al-Haram
Step with the right foot and say the following dua.
“Oh Allah, open the doors of mercy for me.”
Walk towards the Ka’bah with a humble and respectful demeanour.
3. The Circumambulation of the Ka’bah
Tawaf is made up of seven circuits around the Ka’bah anticlockwise.
Steps
- Start with the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad).
- If possible, kiss or touch it.
- If not, point toward it with your right hand and say: بسم الله، والله أكبر
- In the name of Allah. Allah is the greatest.
- Perform seven rounds while saying duas and Allah’s praises.
- Offer two Rak’ahs of prayer at Station Maqam Ibrahim.
- Recite Surah Al Fatiha and Surah Al Kafirun in the first Rakat
- Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas after Surah Al-Fatiha during the second Rak’at
4. Sa’i (Sa’i between Safa and Marwah)
At the beginning of Safa, recite:
إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ
“Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the signs of Allah.” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:158)
Next, read:
“I begin with what Allah has begun.”
At each point along Safa and Marwah, recite:
Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, Allāhu akbar, lā ilāha illā Allāhu wahdahu lā sherīka lah, lah al-mulk wa lah al-hamdu wa Huwa alā kulli shayin qadir, lā ilāha illā All
Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar. There is no god but Allah alone; there is no partner for Him. To Him belongs all dominion and all praise, and He is capable over all things. There is no god but Allah alone. He fulfilled His promise, supported His servants, and routed the enemy troops alone.
It should be recited during each climb of Safa and Marwah.
